QUIT YOUR SOBBING & CALL ME IN THE AFTERNOON

Anthony Lister

Anthony Lister is a well-known painter and installation artist. His work shows influence from a number of genre's including street art, expressionism, and pop art from Francis Bacon to Futura 2000. His work often illustrates the marginal aspects of life we'd rather not linger on - people down on their luck, convicted criminals, the drudgery of the daily grind and occasionally drawing from television and such themes as "misguided role models" that result from it. The message is illuminated further in an homage to the late Heath Ledger depicted as the Joker addressing the less glamorous aspects of society and popular culture making it all too real. His most recent works emphasize vagrant superheros exploiting the trite nature of the everyday while exposing its place in the hairy underbelly of society.

Lister hails from Brisbane, Australia. He's shown throughout Australia and has held solo shows in NYC and London. He's prolific on the street and on gallery walls and has won many art awards. Lister's work has been collected by National Gallery of Australia, David Roberts Collection , TVS Partnership, Brand and Slater Architects, and BHP Collection.

Book Release & Charity Auction

Ad Hoc Art is thrilled to be hosting and supporting a special silent auction benefit Free Arts NYC and to celebrate the launch of Brooklyn Street Art, a new book of photographs by Jaime Rojo, designed by Steven P. Harrington, and published by Prestel.

Ad Hoc Art is generously donating their gallery space for the celebration and silent auction of approximately 25 works by well-known, emerging, and yet to be discovered artists who know no boundaries and follow no rules--their artistic turf is the public gallery of the Brooklyn streets. The artists, whose work animates the pages of this new full-color book, are donating their original or editioned works to be bid up and auctioned off, with all proceeds from the winning sales going directly to benefit Free Arts NYC's creative arts and mentoring programs for at-risk children and families in New York.

Some of the artists whose work will be available for sale include Armsrock, DAIN, Elbowtoe, Gaia, Judith Supine, MOMO, Skewville, Swoon, WK Interact, among MANY more amazing artists! Some of the artists have participated in Free Arts NYC's programs previous to this event and are creating original work to donate to this benefit event to generate significant support for Free Arts NYC.

The auction will be the only silent portion of the celebratory evening. DJ Flub will be enthralling the crowd with his razor wit and rocking decks as the benefit guests enjoy both the Ad Hoc Art gallery and the Ad Hoc Art studio, opened to the general public for the first time to highlight the screen-printing facilities and educational programs that instructors from Peripheral Media Projects call home, as well as many local and international artists.

Brooklyn Street Art Silent Benefit Auction Friday, April 25th, 2008, 7-10 pm (last bids at 9:30 pm) Press preview from 6-7 pm

Ad Hoc Art, 49 Bogart St. Bushwick, Brooklyn

Ad Hoc Art proudly presents...

"Brick Ladies of NYC"

LADY PINK & AIKO

Exhibition dates: March 21 - April 20, 2008

Closing Reception: Sunday April 20th, 6pm - talk with the artists, and SprayMasters screening

Lady Pink & AIKO will be in the gallery to talk about their artwork and the experience of working together on this incredible exhibition. This is also the last chance to see their work as this is the last day of the exhibition. Please stop by early as space will be limited. We will be open from 1pm-8pm. The talk will begin around 6pm.

Immediately following the lecture, Ad Hoc Art is pleased to present SprayMasters, the new graffiti film by Manny Kirchheimer, starring Lady Pink, Lee Quinones, Futura 2000, and Zephyr. The movie, which features revealing new interviews and rare subway art from 1977, sold out its premiere screenings at the Museum of Modern Art in February.

Lady Pink was born in Ecuador, but raised in NYC. In 1979 she started writing graffiti and soon was well known as the only female capable of competing with the boys in the graffiti subculture. Pink painted subway trains from the years 1979-1985. She is considered a cult figure in the hip-hop subculture since the release of the motion picture "Wild Style" in 1982, in which she had a starring role. While still in high school she was already exhibiting paintings in art galleries, and at the age of 21 had her first solo show at the Moore College of Art. As a leading participant in the rise of graffiti-based art, Lady Pink's canvases have entered important art collections such as those of the Whitney Museum, the MET in New York City, the Brooklyn Museum and the Groningen Museum of Holland. She has established herself in the fine arts world, and her paintings are highly prized by collectors. Lady Pink continues to mature as an artist, producing ambitious murals commissioned for businesses and creating new paintings on canvas that express her unique personal vision. Lady Pink recently starred in a documentary film (along with Lee Quinones, Zephyr & Futura 2000) entitled Spraymasters, which recently had it's world premiere at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in Manhattan. She will also will be taking part in an exhibition at the Bronx Museum almost simultaneously with her show here at Ad Hoc Art in Brooklyn and has a vinyl figure coming out through Kid Robot in May of 2008.

Aiko was born in Tokyo and currently resides in NYC. Since powerfully breaking out on the fine art scene she has exhibited in such galleries as Merry Karnowsky (Los Angeles), Lineage Gallery (Philadelphia), New Image Art Gallery (Los Angeles), Iguapop Gallery (Spain), Revelations (Tokyo),and Leonard Street Gallery (London). Being an immigrant from Japan, Aiko has herself been discovering Americana-type pop imagery and then re-creating it in new and innovative ways. Aiko's work walks that thin, fragile tightrope between acceptance and disdain, beauty and danger, unconsciously mirroring the day to day life of your average Brooklyn resident. Aiko has a vinyl figure coming out through Kid Robot and has a feature article being published in Juxtapoz magazine almost simultaneously with her show here at Ad Hoc Art in Brooklyn. She has also been selected to be on a panel at the Brooklyn Museum in conjunction with the upcoming © MURAKAMI exhibition.

Nothing but the Breaks

Steady Baltimore Presents a group show featuring 70s era themed works on canvas by emerging Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston and Virginia graffiti and street artists:

Jazirock, Blister, Under Water Pirates, Ride, Kepoh, Bob, El Toro, Benny Sars, 5003, Ners Boogie, Adam Neubauer

In the '70s, art and music exclusive to the streets and YMCA's of the Bronx personified an inner city environment that begged for an escape from crime and poverty. While POSE 2 designed the fliers and Afrika Bambaataa controlled the crowd with the ones and twos, people from all over NYC for one night forgot about gangs, poverty and politics.

Should it be a surprise that with those same hip-hop founding conditions existing in Baltimore today, that it too is seeking an outlet? Steady Baltimore and DIG's "Nothing But the Breaks" has become that outlet for an emerging sub-culture of street and graffiti artists and lovers of funk and soul music.

Politics, poverty and crime aside, Nothing But The Breaks is Baltimore's answer to its vices and ills.

GAG ME WITH A TOON

Jon Schnepp - Roman Dirge - Nathan Cabrera - Greg Craola Simkins - Chris Devious Gliebie - Matt Danner - Alex Pardee - Tomi Monstre - Kyle Ng - Jeff McMillian - Reginio Gonzales - Matt Bone - Gea* - Adam Hathorn - Jim Koch - Joe Benitez - Jonathan Wayshack - Steven Daily - Rygar - Gill - Jim Mahfood [Food One] - Mike Kelley - SPRFKR

Amongst artists born in a certain period of time there is an affinity for the animated iconography of the 1980's. In April Meltdown Gallery presents GAG ME WITH A TOON, a new works exhibition that will showcase the work of more than twenty creative souls who have been tainted with the neon fruit stripe of Morning in America. Utilizing everything from the saccharine funk of Strawberry Shortcake to the disciplined fashion fervor of the Baroness of Cobra these artists will explore the sketchy in-betweens of animated femininity. In the gallery we shall weigh the sins of Scrappy-Doo and balance them against the irreligious inclusion of Godzuki, Baby Plas and 7-Zark-7. A measure will be made of thunderous barbarians and thunderous cats and of friends both super and amazing. Be ye short and blue or bionic, a real he-man or just your average joe, you will find yourself transformed after having stood amongst the time-displaced art of these stellar talents.

GRAVITY

An installation by Timid

Nancy Victor Gallery is proud to present The first ever solo exhibition by installation artist and photographer - Timid. Timid's credentials within the graffiti movement are qualified by his close friendships and collaborations with artists like Joker, Remi/Rough and Stormie. His first solo outing into the gallery world will be an unforgettable and out there event, not to be missed!

Gravity - The natural force of attraction exerted by a celestial body, such as Earth, upon objects at or near its surface, tending to draw them toward the center of the body.

This show is the culmination of a long held obsession with the movement of liquids. As a child I would spend long hours traveling to school on trains - winter was my favourite time to do this. As the rain tore down outside in the dark streaks of water would appear on the windows and the acceleration of the train would curve and warp these into fantastical patterns that would occupy for hours on end. As I grew up I could often be found failing to concentrate at the back of chemistry class whilst pouring purloined liquids of different colours and viscosity onto the work surface in front of me. It is the implication of movement frozen in the drops and streaks, that draws me to creating large scale representation of gravity's inevitable draw on liquids. Using techniques picked up over the years of photographing and filming graffiti artists "Gravity" will be an installation created using materials that best represent the acceleration of colour over a surface.

Timid biography

Timid started life as a photographer, perhaps literally. Both his father and sister earned their livings as aerial photographers - often bringing their work home with them to be displayed right across the kitchen table. Having spent years only experiencing images as seen from above he rebelled and began photographing buildings and faces close up and defocused. A love of decaying architecture led to Timid onto demolition sites to capture buildings as they expired, here he came into contact with other artists making use of the space. Graffiti and it's relationship to these buildings have fascinated him ever since. Over time through friendships with graffiti artists Timid has progressed from merely photographing them and their work to working alongside them - contributing sculpture and prints to be combined with the form. His art is both a reflection and a progression of this modern artform, combining new materials and techniques of representation - LED lights, latex paints, sculpture and video.

PHIL FROST book launch

Thursday 3rd April 2008 6-9pm

We are honoured to be hosting the exclusive UK book launch and signing of this eagerly awaited monograph, dedicated to the inimitable, internationally acclaimed painter, Phil Frost.

published by Damiani Editore
text by Carlo McCormick
Pusshead
ISBN 978 88 6208 024 8
italian / english
pages: 162
illustrations: 164
binding: hardback
release: spring 2008
price: £25.00

"During the '90s Phil Frost devised an immediately recognisable art on the streets of New York, covering walls and scrapped materials - old doors, tables and objets trouvés - with a white texture that fuses primitivism, graffiti, street art and graphic design. Following this trace of extraordinary visual impact, which recalls Australian and Hawaiian pictorial languages, the book Frost reconstructs the evolution of a graphic cipher rich in abbreviations, symbols and stylised logos that give this self taught artist‚s works the primordial character of tribal articles. If it is true, as Phil Frost believes, "that within every person there is an indigenous expression of themselves," his artistic action consists of "tattooing" the greatest possible number of surfaces, be they an old baseball bat or a girl's skin. After working extensively on the streets, gaining fame among the musical community and skateboarders, Frost's popularity was confirmed in 1995 when PBS did a documentary about him. This won him admission to the gallery and museum circuit."

BR

A fusion of the chaos of metropolis and the sensation of oriental balance - this is the conception of Oriental Roots, Bruno Bogossian's first individual exhibition. The artist, also known as BR, is member of the Flesh Beck Crew. His graffiti works on walls have been admired by Rio's locals throughout the city. The exhibition opens on March 27th, which is the National Graffiti Day. The Movimento Gallery is one of the first and exclusive places for artists who use a contemporary language toward the graffiti segment.

As a Manga fan, BR reveals the influence of Japanese comics in the Oriental Roots exhibition. Besides his distinctive trade mark as a member of the Flesh Beck Crew, the public will can see a new style, in which volume and color effects are allowed much more freedom.

BR believes that the graffiti art is not linked to a standardized esthetic. Hence, it is possible to apply several social and cultural concepts to the paintings. This idea is also valid to Street Art - technique transposal from walls to canvases . Unlike the forerunners of the Spray Art, who used to shrug off traditional methods, like canvas usage or use of diverse techniques, BR believes that refinement is necessary.

"Graffiti on the street walls does not necessarily intend to please the society. It is like an artistic vomit. They are reviews of the consumer society. When you pass, however, from walls to canvases, there is a concern to associate technique to a drapery that catch public's eye. Even though Street Art determine a distance limit and use a shape focused on beauty and harmony, such graffiti segment is allowing the professionals of spray to access the competitive Art Market.", said BR.

Elph: Spirits and Bitumen

You are all invited to come along between 7-10pm, sip on some rum, and enjoy the work of one of our favourite artists, ELPH. It is a solo exhibition that will include massive paintings, mural work in the space, beautiful drawings, screen prints, a full size sculpture of one of his characters, and the launch of his latest publication of drawings and paintings. We're all going to paint a mural together at the Art School on the afternoon of the 19th, so pop down if you want to see ELPH paint.

ELPH is a Scottish illustrator, animator, graphic designer and graffiti artist based in Edinburgh. He is famous worldwide for his big nosed, "wino" characters that now float and stroll around the streets of the UK. He'll be painting one of these characters in a mural at the Glasgow School of Art on the 19th March in conjunction with the Mural Society as part of the exhibition. He has exhibited across the UK and internationally and was recently included in the Tristan Manco, "Street Sketchbook", published by Thames and Hudson. ELPH says, "There are many mixed ideas in the show, a bit like changing the channel on your cable television every 2 minutes. The show goes from war reportage to booze Britain and then to some weird fashion programs.

Wastelands and Wilderness

Parskid and Chip7

Parskid's work focuses on his interests in dark rituals, mythology, sacrifice and spirituality in a world of lush forests and natural surroundings. This is greatly influenced by the forests of the Pacific Northwest where he works and lives. Parskid's painting style utilizes a unique detailed way of painting only with spray paint by using various techniques of masking, stencils and brushwork. His work has been exhibited in many cities in the United States including LA and NYC and abroad in Australia, Taiwan, Spain and the UK. His work has been published in the following magazines: Hi-Frustose, King Brown, Overspray, Art Prostitute, Cool'eh, Novum, Beautiful/Decay, Day in the Lyfe, and Dirty Soup as well as published books, Dot Dot Dash, Canceled Flight, War of Monstars, Pictoplasma 2 and Monstaah!. Parskid characters are no strangers to the streets of Seattle and freight train lines of the United States.

Chip7, also with a background in freight train art and graffiti hails from the opposite side of the US. His work explores brightly colored confessions of a clutter brain through science fiction psychedelic fantasy. Chip7 was trying to paint pretty much everything he could shake a stick at around industrial New Jersey, and where ever the wind took him.Years of painting got him some wonderful memories and adventures, people who hate him, like him, and his work in a few books. Fun and some legal problems go hand and hand. His studio work deals with a range of sources including memories and dreams. Subjects range from both personal and historical using a range of materials including found printed matter collage, animation cel paint, oils, and spray paint. While his nickname remains there are no silver block letters being painted on canvas, and he can no longer be found in the layup all weekend. The ensemble cast that are scattered across the many layers, and shapes of his work range from his own creations of eyeball droids, and neon monsters to a few cameos by Asian heroes inspired by his time living in South East Asia. The semi obsessive ''paranoid'' nature of his current work also deals with theories of global commotion, and catastrophe of the past, present, and possible near future in a somewhat playful manner.

Launching February 23 at The Bronx Museum's new Project Space, Made From Love explores the myths that surround the graffiti movement. Graffiti as an art movement has transcended age, gender, race, culture, and class, which is revolutionary in a world that finds boundaries with all these issues. From pioneers to inspiring new artists, graffiti writers have been transforming walls in New York and around the world since the 1970's with the intent of creating their work from love.

Artists on view:

Acet, Andreis Costa, Alex Neroulias, Amor, Cap, Ces, Clark, Col, Cope, Diva, Drust, ©EllisG, Esther Sanchez, Erotica 67, Ewok, Fever, Flo Shapiro, Gabriel Garcia, Ghost, Indie, Jes One, Ka, KEL1st, Kem 1, Kool, Kurse, Lauren Adelman, Luz, Med, Madge One, Ovie, Peak, Rath, Ribz, Shiro, SMK, Seik, Sest, Serp, Sife, Smash, Sergio Perez, Swoon, T-Kid, Themo, Tracy 168, Veng, Yes, and Zori

SWOON

Opening reception Feb.16th
7 - 10pm

New Image Art is pleased to announce the first Los Angeles solo exhibition by SWOON, "Drown Your Boats." Partially inspired by Angela Carter's "Burning Your Boats," this show, and much of SWOON's work is not only a momentary glimpse in contemporary life; her work speaks of tales, legends, and variations on mythic themes, sparked by great vitality, inventiveness, and a deeply macabre imagination. Having recently participated in an armada of sorts SWOON along with other fellow Pittsburgh "boat punks" constructed their own flotilla and sailed down the Hudson and Mississippi Rivers. For this new exhibition SWOON will be executing a canoe as her central installation piece that will later become part of a Deitch Projects show this Fall.

CES53

CES53 started graffiti bombing in 1985 becoming a king of Europe in the early 90s not only because of his unsurpassed creativity but also because he was the one of the hardest trainbombers of his time, easily matching up with the New York kings and painting with them. Think of SENTO, WANE, REAS, SEEN, DASH, PURE en CESFX . He was especially famous for his one man colour whole cars which are among the very best ever painted.

Picking up classical oil painting in 1987.studied at an Art academy in the 90s were he refined his oil and acrylic techniques and expanding them stylistic into impressionistic and expressionistic works, also he got a taste of conceptual modern art.

Between 1999 and today he has been studying sculpturing including jade carving, stone carving, ceramic working and metal casting in Guatemala, Mexico and Birma.

The last couple of years he’s got big in the steetart scene also featured by the world-famous LASTPLAK COLLECTIVE.

CES53 has done over 2000 works of art including practically any discipline you can name and is already a true legend. From 1 march until 30 march a selection of his work is shown and for sale at the Lock & Load gallery.

INSA is a major player in the London Graffiti scene, well known worldwide for his technical spray-can abilities as well as his iconic posters of abstract ladies' legs in fetish heels.

But INSA is more than a Graffiti Artist. Since graduating from Goldsmiths College of Art in 2001, he has developed the themes within his work. He depicts fashionable, iconic images and objects that modern society craves and obsesses over, alongside the objects commonly associated with fetish, to encourage the viewer to critically appraise what arouses and excites them. He not only makes aesthetic, well crafted pieces of art that have value in their own right, but also weaves layers of critical meaning within each piece, challenging the viewer and particularly the sub-cultures he subscribes to. Within his work he expresses the confusion of a generation who have grown up bombarded with brands, products and sex.

INSA is a rising star in the graphic art, product, graffiti, and design worlds, having already exhibited in London, New York and LA, undertaken private commissions from NIKE and Carhartt and worked on product collaborations with Kangol, Oki-Ni and Kid Robot. His work is highly collectable, so this exhibition should not be missed as

INSA is producing limited edition prints on stretched PVC exclusively for Recoat. Not only this, but INSA will be giving a free limited edition "Buy My Love" T-shirt to the first 20 people through the door at the opening on the 15th of February at 7pm. Plus due to themes within his work and the kind sponsorship from 'Violate', the first 10 people to arrive in full fetish outfits will win tickets and year long memberships to the club night.

Arterial Lines Video : http://youtube.com/watch?v=4uuGbkOslYY

The BLVD Gallery Project Room is a collaborative effort between BLVD Gallery and TRIPLE, a new boutique in the Ballard neighborhood on Historic Ballard Ave. The goal of "The Project Room" is to Create a small venue for emerging artists to develop and expand on concepts through Site specific installations. The first Installation in the Project Room is "Arterial Lines" by Nhon Nguyen, a Seattle based artist who is using the opportunity to create a mural that reflect on his experiences living in Osaka Japan over the past 3 years. This piece will continue to be worked over the course of the installation, eventually incorporating audio of field recordings in Osaka and the contributions of a variety of local artists. There will also be a serigraph created to coincide with the installation.

"Today's modern society is so dependent on technology that it has become so important in our everyday existence. Modern cities are hardwired to support and supply people with the power and communication sources that they need. Having lived and worked in Japan I feel that no where else in the world this is more evident than the major cities of Japan. What fascinated me about living in Japan was how efficient everything was as a result of their advanced technology. The downside to all this technology is that it requires a lot of power and all the cables and wires to carry it. In the US, we bury most of our power cables but in Japan, they are run above ground due to the threat of earthquake damage. The title Arterial Lines is in reference to how this system of power and communication lines are comparatively important to the functioning of the city, much like our own circulatory system that keeps us alive. These wires are the veins and arteries that keeps the city alive."

BLVD Gallery is proud to present "Trade Bloc", a group show that aims to present the global flavor of the urban art milieu. The concept of this show came out of a series of conversations about globalism and art. What are the benefits of a truly Global art market? What are the effects of the internet on artists ability to gain recognition without the participation of the traditional channels of media exposure? We have assembled a group of great artists from Asia, North America, South America, and Europe whose work we feel perfectly illustrate this new borderless world in which we live.

Upper Playground In Association With FIFTY 24PDX Gallery Presents

Dolores

FIFTY 24PDX Gallery presents "Dolores, Las Lagrimas Y Las Rosas", an exhibit of new paintings and works on paper from Chilean artist Basco. Featuring a two-dimensional realism that is striking for its simplicity and confrontational playfulness, Basco works in his Santiago studio and on the streets of various South American cities. He is a young artist, influenced as much by "traditional" painters such De Kooning, Rothko, Motherwell, and Miro as he is by his South American contemporaries like Herbert Baglione, Vitche, Os Gemeos, Nunca, and Blu.

For his first solo show in Portland, Basco (Vazko) has brought together a selection of works on paper and new paintings in his signature style. Some months ago he stumbled upon a vast collection of vintage magazines from Argentina & Chile. Using the hand-drawn images by "manterola" artists and hand-painted photographs from the vintage ephemera, Basco moved his work in a new direction of mixed media, restructuring the faces and images of 1930s- & '40s-era South America.

An opening reception for "Dolores" will be held Thursday, February 7th, from 6:00-9:30pm. Basco will be in attendance, along with music from musician Erik Beats and libations from Redhook. "Dolores" runs through March 29th, 2008.

Presentation of catalog, artwork installations Selected artists will be in attendance

Arkitip is a limited-edition, hand-numbered art book for which excellence in production is of primary importance. The magazine publishes site-specific artworks at a low cost to make art available to collectors at all economic levels. The magazine;s founding principles are (1) support the arts, (2) promote freedom of expression, and (3) make art affordable and accessible.

Each issue is treated like a group gallery show, "curated" by founder Scott Andrew Snyder. Artists are given a specific number of pages to create whatever they wish. They are asked to create site-specific work for the magazine, which changes in size every year. This ensures that the work will be original thereby making it more valuable to the readers. For the Artist, making a contribution to Arkitip is like creating an installation that is distributed around the world. It's a traveling exhibition that art devotees can take home with them to look at again and again.

Gathering past, present and future contributors, Arkitip uses the aforementioned principles as a foundation to pull together a motley crew of diverse artists for a group show entitled HIGHMATH. The title fits as it explains the relationship between the artists, which is multifaceted. Consisting primarily of work on paper including silk screens, lithographs and hand-done originals. Artists will exhibit both existing and never before seen work.

For the first time ever Arkitip will hand over the design responsibilities for the issue edition to an outside source. That source being the design trio Wood Wood. Arkitip will also produce their 44th issue edition as the working catalog for the exhibition. The Danish design collective Wood Wood was founded in 2002 by Brian SS Jensen, Karl-Oskar Olsen and Magnus Carstensen. They initiated their business as a limited t-shirt label and opened their first small shop in central Copenhagen.

AFROLOGY

James Top, a controversial and legendary Graffiti Artist from New York City, will host his first solo show of the New Year, "Afrology" at the new Essex Street Gallery on Friday February 22nd, 2008, 6pm-Midnight. Special invited press will get a sneak peak of the compelling collection on Thursday February 21st, 2008, 6-10pm. Afrology debuts as seventeen artistic variations of the 1970's hairstyle, the "Afro", and depicts controversial, nostalgic and historical messages of the African-American experience via mixed media and graffiti art.

Better known by the media as "The People's Graffiti Artist," James has gained his legendary status as a founding member of the The Odd Partners (TOP). As a graffiti crew, TOP would come to dominate the New York City subway system during the mid to late 1970's. Later, James evolved from the "tags" on the subways to elaborate canvas pieces such as those displayed in Afrology. Today James is an art instructor with his latest graffiti workshop having been the subject of controversy within the national and international media. While serving as an example of expression for younger artists, James Top hopes to use the Afrology exhibit to express what he calls "The Black Experience" united by sports, music, historical and current events.

"I take great pride in capturing what I feel is the African American experience in America," says James Top about his solo exhibition here in New York. "It is my time not only to be the voice of graffiti art but also to be the voice of the people in my community." The Essex Street Gallery is located in the Lower East Side, where the heart of graffiti explosion is synonymous with rebellion, controversy and talented artistic expression. "Our [gallery showings] create a window into [the] artists brought together to inspire and support each other in an often hostile environment," says gallery owner, Jordan Cory Sorman.

Afrology is anticipated to be one of the most widely attended street art shows not only because of the significant talent of James Top, but because of his profound messages about being an African-American man in New York City. For fans, it is a true display of how far your street credibility can propel you into an artistic position of prestige and respect.

About James Top: After spending 10 years using New York City trains as murals, James Top has been hailed as one of New York's legendary graffiti artists by the media and street aficionados alike. Since his mural works on trains back in 1986, James is now working as an instructor and consultant with schools, charities, and youth based organizations. James Top is also the producer and host of "Graffiti NYC," a New York City weekly cable TV show which explores the impact of graffiti's history in different neighborhoods.

About Essex Street Gallery: Opened in November of 2007, the Essex Street Gallery has housed a variety of creative artist from around the world such as Pedro Cuube Arieta and Jordan Schaps. Jordan Cory Sorman is the owner of Essex Street Gallery and has dedicated the gallery to opening its doors every month for new innovative artist. The Gallery is located on 27 ½ Essex Street in the Lower East Side.

Daim, Daddy Cool, Tasek - New mural!

The studio community Getting-Up with the District Advisory Council began eight Years ago to plan a huge graffiti mural in Rothenburg place. The ideal surface for the image, 270 sq m, a large high-rise building facade, directly in the marketplace, was donated late in 2007, with the help of many sponsors and countless supporters from the district. After two cold months' work, in which the three artists Gerrit Peters, Heiko Zahlmann and Mirko Reisser emptied hundreds of cans, into the mural called "Identity."

The inauguration speakers are Mr. Schreiber, head of the District Office in mid-Hamburg, and the Board of SAGA GWG, Mr. Sachs, is invited.

All residents of Rothenburg place and interested people from other parts of the city are welcome.

Getting-up warmly thanks the district office in mid-Hamburg, Fachamt for urban and landscape planning, Saga GWG, BGFG, Wohnpark Rothenburg, Hamburg Water, HANSA Housing and Siemens for their friendly support and excellent cooperation, and wishes Rothenburgsort great enjoyment of the new mural.

Nick Walker: Pretty Decorating

Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art is proud to present Pretty Decorating, Bristol-based artist Nick Walker's first solo exhibition in the United States. Pretty Decorating will feature Walker's most intricate stencil paintings to date, all related to the satirical narrative of the English Vandal from his "Morning After" series. Walker presents some 30 new works in the exhibition, revealing the exploits of a character whose mission is world domination through artistic expression. Pretty Decorating will be on view February 2 through February 24, 2008, with an opening reception held on February 2, from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. A custom-designed, 20-foot hot air balloon, the Vandal's mode of transport, will be tethered outside the gallery and scheduled to launch over Hollywood air space as part of the exhibition.

Pretty Decorating follows the path of one man - the Vandal. Each painting represents the character's endeavors to bring the dull architecture of the world's largest cities back to life, animated with color - a more dramatic turn on the term 'painting the town red'. The paintings reveal the Vandal's chosen cities (including Bristol, Sydney, London, New York, and Los Angeles), his tools, and clues as to how he sets about achieving his ultimate goal, but never disclose his true identity. The series of works entitled 'The Morning After' illustrate the Vandal taking a moment to observe his achievements from the night before. "He is the quintessential Englishman," states Walker, "observing something he shouldn't have done, getting away with it - a good night's reflective moment. Up close or at a distance, he's scott free." The Vandal is the archetypal practitioner of urban art, and an ironic symbol of the myth that now surrounds this worldwide phenomenon. The show will unfold like a story, each painting depicting another page in the narrative.

Girls On Top

UK's first female Graffiti show, in Canterbury, Kent UK.

The next big thing, Girls on Top, is holding an exhibition of their art. The show, taking the same name as the collective, is the first all female Graffiti show to be seen in the UK. The show aims to celebrate the feminine style in Graffiti, which is rapidly gaining popularity and respect. GOT’s style is funky and fresh and they are here to rule the dance!

Founded in 2000, Girls on Top was brought back to life in July 2007 with new members - some being introduced by Thames and Hudson, publishers of ‘Graffiti Woman’, the “who’s who” of female street vandals - at a Graffiti jam held at Stockwell, one of the last remaining London “Halls of Fame” – Ken Livingstone does not like illegal art very much, except for street art guru Bankski (spelling intended!).

The crew is united through a shared passion for Graffiti but GOT members are also involved in fashion, illustration, community art, fine art, break- dancing, tattooing and photography. Members are based all over England and various parts of Europe.

Michael Alan, also known as the infamous graffiti artist "Fade" has painted the NYC streets for the past 17 years. A native New Yorker and figure artist, Alan incorporates mixed media and intense crosshatching, ultimately creating figurative hybrids and a surreal, dark narrative.

His current work "The Time Travelers", depicts creatures that are caught in the past, present, and the future, surviving in a alternate reality.

Alan studied art at Pratt Institute and graduated from The School of Visual Arts. Alan's work has previously been exhibited on The Today Show, The Village Voice, The New York Times, Art World Digest, Elemental Magazine, Time Out NY, N.Y Press, N.Y ARTS and many others. WRITERS STRIKE

The First Ever Mash-Up of Street Artists, Art Geeks and New York's most infamous Graffiti Vandals all asking the following question: What would you do without us?

Illegal street artists serve important civic, commercial and artistic purposes. They beautify decaying urban neighborhoods. They re-imagine and lend creativity to uninspired city landscapes and utilitarian surfaces. They provide imagination, wonder and a style to be co-opted by corporate advertisers. They counter the overbearing messages of billboards, signs and other invasive marketing techniques. They reclaim public space, providing a voice for the people in the midst of a city at an ever-further remove. Yet, they still practice their art in secret, hiding from overzealous police and a legal system that punishes their democracy, seeks to handcuff their art, stifle their creativity and silence their voice.

WRITERS STRIKE will display all "illegal" work alongside and in comparison to blank walls, unadorned objects, intrusive advertisementsand the boring paraphernalia of urban life. Let the viewer decide the value of our art.

Dare

Sigi 'DARE' von Koeding

'Dare to be different'

Graffiti artist for over twenty years, Sigi von Koeding, education in typography and calligraphy, sprays under the name of DARE. Born in Basel in 1968, Dare is one of the most prolifi c artist of his generation. He has already realised more than 1000 graffi tis in 13 countries all over the world. After several exhibitions in Switzerland between 1992 and 1995, Dare exhibited at the Art Frankfurt fair and at the Kallman Museum in Munich in 1996.

His works can be interpreted as written selfportraits, every letter is unique and has it's own expression, refl ecting the artists daily feelings and representing his name. Dare Induces his own writing style, punctuated by elegant and fl uid poses. Always exploring new posibilities and techniques on his canvases. Qualifi ed as « branding », his style has an unique identity, including letters outlined with extreme precision, layers of bright colours and original backgrounds.

Always in experimentation through a growing career, in the spring of 2007, he painted the appartement of Gunter Sachs in Velden (Austria) together with Ata Bozaci (Toast) and is today the curator of the Carhartt Gallery in Weil am Rhein (D). Vernissage Jeudi 17 janvier 2008 / de 18 à 21 Hrs / En présence de l'artiste Sigi 'DARE' von Koeding 'Dare to be different'

© Speerstra Gallery/ M.Capucine 2008
