Supa Dupa: 'Rarities' Exhibition1st December 7.00PM - 9.00PM The Frisson Gallery is excited to present a new exhibition by the very talented London based, Supa Dupa crew.... Supa Dupa consists of six artists united by beer and good times. All hailing from roots in Graffiti, it is clear to see the impact that this genre has had on them. Their inspiration ranges from flash art, comic books, the sci-fi genre, and iconography. Now two years on from its formation, the crew have made a name for themselves (be it unintentionally) through their unique collaborative style usually seen within murals and conceptual pieces. Their very first group exhibition, 'Rarities' features the collaborations of: Alfa, Herse, Fybe, Tobe, WordToMother, and Mesek. The exhibition shall prove an insight into a unity that can exist between various styles of graffiti and works that steer more towards that of fine art. To find out more about the exhibition and the individual artists please view the Frisson Gallery website. The Frisson Gallery is open Monday to Saturday 10:00 till 18:00 and Sunday 11:30 till 17:00. The Gallery is free for the public to view and accessible by wheelchair. For further information on this event please ring us on 01227 451125 or email us at info@frissongallery.co.uk.

"Process"
New work by Sneke, Hews and Virus PROCESS, a show featuring graffiti artists and style writers Hews, Sneke, and Virus, provides the viewer a rarely seen glimpse into the approach and evolution of their art. Process incorporates and displays the methods involved in creating the art and reintroduces it in a way that gives the public a window into what goes on behind the "finished" pieces. Sneke works beyond the traditional 2d of Graffiti into the realm of sculpture and relief. In a way exploring the dimensional qualities of his work as well as isolating elements to accentuate the more abstract forms of the graffiti lexicon. The architectural qualities of graffiti is what shows in the work of Hews. His canvas work explores the foundations of building veritable siege engines made of alphabets. Vancouver legend VIRUS works with the pop pastiche that Graffiti has adored since Fab 5 Freddy first painted his Campbell Soup can tribute to Andy Warhol in the seventies. "There is something raw about seeing the perfect 'imperfections.' There is an energy in the thumbnails, the sketches, and the brainstorming that does not always come across in the final product." -Hews Process highlights the elements of the "unseen" and celebrates the individual approach of the different artists. The final pieces may look similar but each artist incorporates distinct methods in executing their work. Hews, Sneke, and Virus are now transcending their graffiti art and applying the elements into different formats and mediums. For more info:

Miguel Paredes - B-Boys
Reception for the Artist: Friday November 9 from 7:00 - 10:00 pm It was in the fall of 1981 when urban life as we have come to describe it was born from the street culture of the Bronx and Queens. When Run DMC and KRS ONE lead the way to a Hip Hop music revolution. While Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat validated street art culture, a young LaGuardia high school art student living on the then very dangerous Upper West Side took the name MIST to a graffiti street campaign that ran thorough all five boroughs. MIST survived those days, survived Mayor Koch, survived the Son of Sam, survived the drug epidemic, survived the Latin Kings but was ingrained with a knowledge of street art that stills shows its scars today. It is with great pleasure that, with advent of fall in New York, Capla Kesting Fine Art brings MIST back to his former home to display a collection of artworks reminiscent of this time. Not under a graffiti pseudonym but as himself, a successful Miami based businessman, a successful publisher and successful painter, as Miguel Paredes. Miguel Paredes' boundless approach to the canvas is evident upon sight, communicated through his vibrant and eclectic artistic style; a meshing of abstracted figurative painting, rich with line drawings and floral elements. Working in mixed media, Paredes' work is energetic, sometimes frantically so. Directions: Bedford Ave L train Stop. Exit the subway walking west on North 7th, away from river, 2 blocks to Roebling, then proceed south 2 blocks to North 5th. The gallery is located on the corner of North 5th and Roebling.

AIDS Walk: Artist Appreciation Night II
HEAD SPACEa solo exhibition of paintings by Labrona Canadian artist Labrona is best known for his extraordinary paintings on freight trains that roll all over the US and Canada. "I'm just a guy that paints trains, does art, doesn't want a regular nine to five. I use my art as my voice," he says. "I send my thoughts and emotions on to the railways for people to see.A train yard is like a forever-changing outdoor art gallery." The hulking thirty-five year old lumberjack from Ottawa has been working for years with many of Canada's best known graffiti artists and his work has been shown in galleries all over the world. It is only recently, however, that people have really begun to take note of his unique skill, giving him the opportunity to design a new line of hand-crafted skateboards and solo shows in various North America cities. Drawing his inspiration from 80s skate culture, rundown industrial areas, and German Expressionism, Labrona's fascination with painting heads comes from his desire to convey raw human feeling - "You can tell so much from an expression, the eyes and mouth. there are many different stories within each painting." The paintings in HEAD SPACE continue this enthralling narrative exploration. Opening Reception Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art Contact the gallery by email art@carmichaelgallery.com, visit
www.carmichaelgallery.com
The gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday 3:00PM to 8:00PM and by appointment. (PLEASE NOTE NEW HOURS!) About Labrona (written by his artist friend, Other): "Labrona's name was concocted one night in some ski pub in the echoing mountains of Banff National Park by one Anil Dular, a mythical hip-hop speaking Cherokee navigator turned selective logger up off the coast of Alaska...This is the world that Labrona runs in. A French Canadian house builder who spends as much time in Riviere de Loup (River of the Wolf) as the beer-swilling metropolis of Montreal, Labrona is a collector of disco blues Chicago style albums and an old school 360 boneless type of skateboarder. Most importantly, he is a painter of metal beasts that roam his habitat - Labrona has made a name for himself painting poignant faces on the sides of boxcars, wheaties, and any old freight car that shifts off into the night a bit happier for the addition, yet retaining the sad air only a freight train can convey in its creaks and squeals and stand still mosquito silence... So you see it is hard to describe a Labrona...maybe you will find the meaning in his paintings."

Sandor Derrick has traveled thru Europe and Canada capturing the striking wall art found in our cities. These include images from the Berlin Wall before it was dismantled. Street art really catches the eye. Some call it vandalism. Others see graffiti as guerilla populist art. His works bring an international perspective to the debate. Arte MuerteCISA Gallery is hosting an opening reception for the group exhibition, Arte Muerte. Arte Muerte is CISA Gallery's 1st Annual Day of the Dead exhibition. We will be hosting a public altar. Please bring photos and items for our altar. The Aztecs and other Meso-American civilizations have practiced the Day of the Dead ritual for over 3000 years. People visit the cemetery where their loved ones are buried, decorating gravesites with marigold flowers and candles. They bring toys for dead children and bottles of tequila to adults. They sit on picnic blankets next to gravesites and eat the favorite food of their loved ones. The Spaniards viewed death as the end of life. The indigenous view it as the continuation of life. The Spaniards considered the ritual to be sacrilegious and indigenous people to be barbaric pagans. They tried to eliminate the ritual and were unsuccessful. CARMICHAEL GALLERY OF CONTEMPORARY ART PRESENTS Delirium Tremens[tree-muhnz, -menz] noun Pathology. a withdrawal syndrome occurring in persons who have developed physiological dependence, characterized by tremor, visual hallucinations, and autonomic instability. a morbid condition of acute danger. sometimes fatal. not just another Halloween show. Featuring the work of Akeni (Brasil), Andre Firmiano (Brasil), Andrice Arp (USA), Anne Julie Aubry (France), Bagger43 (USA), C215 (France), Case (Canada), Chad Mount (USA), CJ Metzger (USA), Codak (USA), Denise Simon (USA), Josh Heilaman (USA), Joulu (Ukraine), Mehgan Trice (USA), Miss Mindy (USA), Paul Barnes (Scotland), Plankton Art Company (USA), Ruben Romero (Colombia), Sixe (Spain), Suzanne Woolcott (Scotland), Tiago Fazito (Brasil), Yuki Miyazaki (Japan/USA), Zeila Trevisan (Brasil), and more to be announced! Opening Reception Saturday, October 20th, 2007 >From 7:00 PM - Midnight RSVP to rsvp@carmichaelgallery.com Show closes November 1st Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art Anger. Dread. Insomnia. Depression. Palpitations. Hallucinations. Seizures. These are just several of a long list of symptoms brought upon by Delirium Tremens, a severe and horrific illness caused by withdrawal or abstinence after heavy alcohol and other addictive substance abuse. Judy Garland, Jimi Hendrix, and Edie Sedgwick, amongst many others, tragically suffered from the severe pain of this disease and the untreated mortality rate of delirium tremens is up to 35%. The condition has been referenced by a wide range of writers, musicians, and filmmakers - from Mark Twain, Jack Kerouac, and George Orwell, to Aerosmith, "West Side Story", and "The Simpsons". For this show, the artists have considered what the essence of Delirium Tremens - withdrawal, loss, and the accumulation of physical, emotional, and psychological pain that subsequently rushes through their bodies - means to them and interpreted it in their own ways. Their inspiration has come from their individual life experiences, with some artists directly relating to the strict definition of the illness and others capturing the trembling anguish of sweaty, sleepless nights, emotional volatility, and confusion caused by other personal dramas. The pulse of the show, akin to the illness itself, is dramatic, restless and irregular, as the artists reveal a dark, fearful edge to themselves that is both slightly disorienting and addictively transfixing at the same time. The gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday 3:00PM to 7:00PM and by appointment. Contact us by email or call 323.969.0600 for more information.

Out On A RailAzle resident Michelle Winder makes a living as a conductor/brakeman for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad. One day four years ago, while watching the graffiti-festooned cars pass hastily by, she raised up her “little Nikon pocket digital,” focused in and took a shot of an oncoming skull. That photo has now qualified Winder for a first class ticket on artists’ row – a trip that started three years ago in Manitou, Colorado. After a scheduled stop in Azle, that train is now throttling up the engines and heading straight to the Heliotrope Gallery on Fort Worth’s Bluebonnet Circle. Winder’s photographic images of graffiti-tagged boxcars, taken around the Fort Worth area, can be viewed at the gallery starting Monday, Sept. 4, through Saturday, Oct. 13. A special showing of her one-woman show titled “Out On A Rail,” can be viewed Saturday, Sept.8, during Fort Worth’s annual Gallery Night, from 10 to 9 p.m. – at which time patrons will also be treated to wine from Lakeside’s Lightcatcher Winery and music by Bruce William’s three-piece combo. Winder is a Fort Worth native who grew up in the Cultural District. At the age of 11 she was taken under the wing of a local photography and gallery owner Perry Caldwell, who instilled in her a fiery passion for photography. Heliotrope, 3461 B Bluebonnet Circle in Fort Worth Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Gallery Night runs from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The wine and music will start to flow around 6 p.m., at which time Winder should also be present.

The Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation has been dedicated to promoting young artists ever since it was founded. In this way the Walls project is in perfect synchrony with the institution's mission, one which sets it apart from many other art institutions in Italy. The Foundation strives to promote an urban space art that originates from a project and from mutual respect for other places. The event will mark a new phase for this part of the city: opening up the vast areas of the Arsenal, the oldest in Europe, which is finally being revived after years of abandonment. David Choe and Saber"IGNITE WHAT'S NEXT"
[Sadly, Herbert was unable to make it this time, but there may be a special guest. - Susan] Upper Playground Portland is proud to host the Portland stop on the "Ignite What's Next" Art Tour, sponsored by Sparks, Upper Playground, and Juxtapoz Art & Culture Magazine. The tour will showcase three of the world's top artists from the world of contemporary art - David Choe (Los Angeles), Herbert Baglione (Sao Paolo), and Saber (Los Angeles). Live art installations will take place at Upper Playground in the afternoon of Wednesday, September 19th. Later that evening, the trio of artists will paint again at the inner-SE music venue Rotture, accompanied by a DJ set from former Portland resident, D.J.P. David Choe is a painter and graphic artist, who is known as much for
his exaggerated vulgarity as for his aesthetic sense, and whose
inspiration for his art comes from international hitchhiking
expeditions. His art graces all facets of urban lifestyle, from
t-shirts, to shoes, to video games and even hotel rooms.
D.J.P is one of the pioneers of "blending," a style that has recently become commonly known as the "mash-up". He can mix Pat Benatar's "Love Is A Battlefield" over the Pharcyde's classic "She Keeps On Passing Me By" and turn it into a Drum'n Bass blend about love lost that gets everyone on their feet, even people who think they don't like hip-hop. P's mix CDs have become underground classics, featuring in several year-end critics polls (Village Voice and Rolling Stone, among others). Wednesday, September 19th Wednesday, September 19th
